paramErr (-50)

Summary
The application you were using failed to ask the Mac OS for information in the "correct" way.

Details
This error comes from several sources but the majority of the time it is the File Manager that returns this error to you. The File Manager is that part of the Mac OS responsible for handling Files (and Folders). Any time you do something to a file (change it, delete it, move it, etc.), the File Manager is involved.

For example, let's say that you have a CDROM disk inside your CD drive and a floppy disk inserted in your floppy drive. Further, assume that you have an application that is poorly written. One of the options the application lets you do is "Eject" the CD or Floppy. The application does that by issuing the "Eject" system command. However, the "Eject" command has a restriction: "You can't eject a diskette or CD until it is selected." But the programmer didn't check first (in the application code) to see if a CD or diskette was selected and issued the "Eject" system command anyway. If one of them WAS selected, it would be ejected. However if neither one was selected, the system would return the -50 error to the application indicating that the operation failed (no CD or floppy selected).

This is just one example of this rather generic error. There are several hundred system commands that can potentially return this -50 error. Each one of them returns it for a different reason.

What to do
In general, this error indicates incorrectly written code while using a system command. You should contact the company currently supporting the application for an update.

Feedback
The following information comes from Symantec's web site related to -50 errors:
"Let's say you run Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) on a drive with directory problems. At some point in the examination, NDD attempts to mount the drive and immediately reports that an 'Unexpected Error occurred, Error -50.'

This error is not generated by NDD, but is passed from the Finder when NDD attempts to mount the drive. This error may indicate a problem with the driver, or with the directories on the drive. Try updating or reinstalling the driver with your formatting software.

If this does not solve the problem, you may be able to bypass the problem by preventing the driver from loading at startup. If the drive is an external drive, try starting up the computer with the drive turned off, and then turn it on after the computer has finished booting. Then choose Disks: Show Missing Disks in NDD to find the drive, and examine. If NDD asks to load the driver, cancel this prompt, and see if NDD will repair problems anyway.

If this does not solve the problem, there may be a SCSI or termination problem involving the drive. Check that the SCSI chain is properly configured and that all drives are correctly terminated. Try removing from the SCSI chain all drives other than the one generating the -50 error."

This information from Symantec is sort of a "cop out" because the original developer should assume responsibility for correctly programming the application in the first place. They should NOT point the blame on someone else ("Finder told me to tell you that").

However, the rest of the information is worth trying to get rid of the error.

----------

"I have experienced a funny problem on a Mac, when I try to copy files. What happens is that some files cannot be copied and I receive the message
'File could not be read, as it doesn't exist'
or
'Could not be copied - error: -50'.

It is not the same file there is problems with, and if I try to copy the same file several times, the problem will occur some of the time.

The Machine is running filesharing in a network, and has an ISDN internet line. It has system DK7.5x installed

The problem occurs no matter if the filesharing is enabled or not. The problem does NOT occur if I start the machine with extensions disabled."

"I had the very same problem. As soon as I turned off my Virex 5.9.1, it worked fine."

----------

"My client is getting error messages when trying to copy files from a Mac volume on NT 4.0 (with SFM and SP4) to System 7.6 PowerBooks. The error is something like:
The file '' couldn't be read, because an error of type -50 occurred. Do you want to continue copying?"

"This means that NT thinks that the file is in use, even though it probably isn't. NT is really stupid that way rather often. Anyway, the solution there is generally to wait a minute or so, and if that doesn't work, to think about what on the server would be using the file."

----------

"PrintMonitor displays an error dialog box that displays: Where = 80; Why = -50. How do I interpret these error codes, and how do I fix them?"

"The "Where" errors are internal PrintMonitor debugging strings. There is currently no published table of these codes.

The "why" (or y=) portion is the system error number. The system generated the "Why" Macintosh error code.

Error code -50 is a file system paramErr (error in user parameter list). You can usually resolve this by throwing away the PrintMonitor Documents folder, which is "Spool Folder", located in the System Folder. PrintMonitor recreates this folder the next time you print a document."

----------

"I'm getting the message 'couldn't complete last command because of a Mac OS error - result code -50' when I attempt to extract some audio tracks to my hard drive. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why I get this message with some tracks and not others, and the translation of error -50 (error in user parameter list) makes no sense in this context."

"Had/have the same problem. I got the errors going from my built in CD drive when I tried to copy (audio) to the burner or to the HD. I put the same CD in the burner
and it copied to the HD with no problems. Then I ran the CD I was trying to copy in the regular CD drive but excluded the track that was erroring and used the stored copy of this track from the HD. Worked fine.

Messy workaround I guess. Never did figure out what was the cause."

----------

"When creating a disk image of a compact disc (CD) or hard drive, Disk Copy 6.3 reports it could not complete the operation due to a -50 error."

"This is a problem with Disk Copy 6.3 only. When making an image from a volume that has data stored at the end of the volume, Disk Copy 6.3 will not complete the image operation and report a -50 error.

Workarounds:
1) Media that is not read-only can be optimized so that all free space is at the end blocks of the volume.
2) When saving a volume as a disk image, change the size of the image so that it is slightly larger."

----------

"Been happily running 9.04 on my 6320 from the get-go but have been unable to access my Internet control panel. Everytime I try I get a box labelled:
"Internet Config. Extension Error -50 has occured. Unable to continue."

The Internet configuration file itself seems to live okay with IE and iCab, so what can be the story on the Internet control panel going screwy like this on access?"

"Try trashing the Internet Preferences file in the Prefs folder of your System Folder. If that doesn't, just reinstall Internet Config."

"I tried this (deleting the internet prefs) and got the i-net control panel to function, but all I really suceeded doing was to wipe all the configurations and settings and preferences for IE! I hastily replaced the deleted i-net prefs with a backup copy. Since IE seems to function well enough without the Internet control panel, I figure now why bother even having it, so I deleted it and IE and iCab still run happily ever after."
