Summary
This error indicates that a command sent on the IDE bus of your computer timed out.
Details
You need to understand two things before this problem will make sense. First, the disk drives inside your computer are attached to the computer's main circuit board over a connection called a bus. In systems made after about the end of 1997, that bus is known as an ATA bus. This is exactly the same type of bus found in most modern Windows-style computers. In the PC, the bus is known as an IDE bus.
The designers of the bus architecture established a set of "rules" that hardware manufacturers must follow if they want their devices to communicate properly on that bus. If a device "breaks" those rules, the device won't function properly (or at all).
A device timeout (reported as -9356 by the Mac OS for devices attached to an ATA bus) indicates that the device isn't working in harmony with the other things on the bus.
What to do
If you recently added some devices to the bus, verify the original configuration is still working correctly by temporarily removing the new equipment.
After verifying that the original system is OK, verify that the "Master/Slave" designations are correct - per the manufacturer's instructions. Also make sure that the overall length of the data cable that connects all of the ATA devices together is no longer than 18".
If you continue to have problems, contact the vendor of the device you just added for assistance.
If you didn't add any new devices to your system since getting this error, then it is VERY possible that you have a hardware failure associated with one (or more) of your ATA devices. If you don't feel capable of diagnosing and fixing the problem yourself, have the computer examined by an Apple Service Center.
