아래에 ABMA (alt.binaries.mac.applications) 서바이벌 가이드를 올립니다.

ABMA Survival Guide v 007 Jul 8, 1999 How do I Upload, Download, Decode ? by LuvBunny

* INTRODUCTION This guide is a step by step guide for Downloading, Uploading and Decoding binaries from and to ABMA. In order to use this Guide you will need to download both parts of the ABMA QuickStart or at least some of the volumes of the ABMA ToolKit. You can request these at any time. Or, you can download the programs you need from the Internet by referring to the links section of this guide.

This guide is designed to be complete, concise and comprehensible to folks with little or no ABMA experience. This is not intended as a replacement to the FAQ, nor is it an 'official' work. I put it together based on the things people seemed to ask the most about. Please feel free to redistribute this to anyone in the group that requests help.

The information in this Guide is the product of many peoples' knowledge and goodwill. I have compiled and arranged alot of information here. Most of it is stuff that I learned from other people in ABMA. I didn't know any of it 3 years ago. So please, remember that ABMA is a group of people, not a single person. Some of them are Lazarus Long, Webster, Pinochle, Alkohalic, Al Uminum, Shivering, Tricky, Exception, sQuid Pro Quo, Fart Knocker, Owl, Jamaican, Mooch, NetGuru, Freedom1, Grizzle and LOTS of others that deserve credit for helping to make ABMA what it is.

* DOWNLOADING

-INTRODUCTION

To download you will need a News Reader, a set of Decoding Utilities and probably a registration number. A news reader is a specialized and dedicated application for viewing newsgroups and the content in them, and which will correctly download the files that are attached to the news messages. Once you have downloaded the files from ABMA, you will need to convert them into a form that you can use. YA-Decoder and some form of StuffIt is the minimum you should have to convert and decode the files. Lastly, you will need to acquire a serial or registration number to evaluate the application you have downloaded and installed. These can usually be found in a database posted here in ABMA.

Posts are usually uploaded in segments. You will need to download all of the segments, decode and then recombine them.

It is recommended that you use YA-NewsWatcher 2.4.x, 3.x or 4.x for downloading binaries. The following instructions assume YA-NewsWatcher's use to download. Use the latest version possible with in the limits of your computer. I would highly recommend this application for downloading attached files. Please make use of YA-NW's extensive online help, it should answer most questions about the program that you have.

Warning: It is not advised to download or post attached binaries with Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator, Hogwasher or most other of these applications with news reading or posting abilities. All of them have minor to serious problems with downloading and decoding binaries from ABMA. They are intended for downloading attached JPEGS and GIFS, not BinHex files. They will eventually corrupt your downloads and cause problems.

-SETTING UP YA-NEWSWATCHER In the preferences, go to 'Saved Articles' and check 'Save Encoded Text', go to 'Extracting Binaries' and check 'Keep No Attachment Found and Partial Downloads', 'Decode Extracted Binary Attachments', 'Use Slack BinHex Decoding Rules'. You can also select a default location for saving the downloads here.

There are a lot of other options you can play with but they are not specific to ABMA downloading, so you should simply consult YA-NW's on line help regarding them. A few of the selections you checked here are only important when doing certain types of downloading, but they are the minimum you should set for general use. YA-NW has built in decoding for many types of files. If YA-NW does not decode the file you can use YA-Decoder or StuffIt (More on that later).

-GETTING ALL THE PIECES Parts and Segments There is often a lot of confusion about these. Parts are not Segments and Segments are not Parts.

Segments are created by DropSegment. A single segment is attached to a message and then posted or downloaded. It is VERY useful to know how many segments are in a post.

Parts are created when a single attachment is uploaded by a news client like YA- NewsWatcher. The size of the part is determined by the 'News Part Size' setting (in YA-NewsWatcher). As mentioned before, this should be set to between 200Kb and 800Kb. The number of parts depends then on the total size of the attachment. How many parts are in a attachment is not useful information. The number of, creation of and combining of parts should be handled by the news client and should be seamless. There is no need to post this information when uploading. You will not be able to download an attached file unless all of the parts are available on the server. YA-NW will display a < just left of the author in the 'count' column if the attachment is incomplete. More later on what to do if the attachment is incomplete.

Select the article that you want to download with the mouse.

Go to the menu bar and select 'Extract Binaries' from the 'Special' menu or use Command B. You can select more than one article at a time and YA-NW will download them one at a time from it's que.

YA-NW will make a temp file as it downloads. This file is a UU encoded "wrapper" around and attachment. YA-NW should handle the UU decoding seamlessly. When it is finished, it will undo the UU file. Contained within that file should normally be a .hqx file. YA_NW should decode that as well. Which finally contains the segment or other Mac file that you want. When it is done, you should be left with a StuffIt segment or complete archive.

You will need to repeat this downloading process until you have grabbed all of the segments. Most posters will indicate somewhere how many total segments to the post there are. This information should be in a separate readme file.

When you have downloaded all of the segments of the post you will need to combine them. Put them all in the same folder.

-PUTTING IT TOGETHER Make sure that they all have the DropSegment icons. If they do not, there could be some problems decoding the post which we will cover later.

It is recommended that you use StuffIt Deluxe or StuffIt Expander 4.0. Try not to use version 4.5 or 5.0 of these programs because they both can cause some serious problems when attempting to decode. Some archives will only decode using version 5.1 or later, in which case you may have no choice but to use it. Double click or drag and drop the first segment file onto the decoding app. Make sure that if you use Expander, that you let it know to combine segments in the preferences.

Often posters will rename their segments, this can cause a little confusion with StuffIt as it , which may ask you where a part is. Just help it out by finding the approximate part name with the same number as the one it is asking for.

-DECODING IT When StuffIt is finished, you will have either a StuffIt archive/.sit or .sea, a disk image/.img or .smi, an installer application or rarely some other kind of archive.

.sit or .hqx StuffIt Deluxe 4.0, StuffIt Expander 4.0 or MindExpander is the recommended application for dealing with a .sit file. If the .sit file does not open with StuffIt, use MindExpander.

.sea This is a self extracting archive. It should not require an application, and should extract itself by double clicking it.

.img Use DiskCopy 6.3.2 these files. It is strongly recommended that you use DiskCopy, only use ShrinkWrap as a last resort. Extracting disk images creates a virtual disk on your desktop which behaves as though it were a real disk. Usually the mounted disks contain an installer that you will need to run to install the program. You can dismiss the disk by dragging it [the mounted disk, NOT the image file] to the trash.

.smi This is a self extracting disk image. It should not require an application, and should mount itself by double clicking it.

temp This is YA-NW's temporary file. It is UU encoded. YA-Decoder or UUcd is best for very aggressive decoding of files. Sometimes you can use StuffIt or MindExpander, but this is not recommended. Usually, YA-NW handles this file by itself.

Some times your target is wrapped with in any number of encoding's, like an onion. Be persistent. You will get it.

-TROUBLE SHOOTING YOUR DOWNLOADS CRC's are a means of verifying that the file which you have downloaded is the exact file that was up loaded. Most posters will include CRC's in a separate post.

If, after you have downloaded all of the segments, and you have problems combining and or decoding them, use ListFiles to make your own CRC's of the download.

Compare your CRC's with the poster's.

They should be exactly the same, the file(s) that are different are the problem.

At this point you should probably ask for a re-post of the problem file(s) and indicate to the group that your CRC's don't match with the posters.

TO MAKE CRC's Use ListFiles 2.6

From the menu "Worksets" select CheckSum and CRC

Options: List Formatting: Unchecked every box except File name and Global Checksum and CRC.

Drag and Drop the folder containing only the segments of the post on to ListFiles.

ListFiles will work for a while and then spit out the CRC's, as a bunch of text which you should compare to the posters.

-CREATOR AND FILE TYPES All Mac files have a means by which the computer identies them, these are the Creator and Type.

The Creator Tel's the Mac what application the file belongs to (which can be itself if it is an application) and the Type tell's the Mac exactly what kind of le it is (Application, Text, Preference, Document etc).

Some times this information is missing because the file is only slightly corrupted and can be fixed by manually changing the type and or creator. Often though, if this information is missing the file is useless. With out this information, the file will appear generic, with out any custom or application icon.

If your downloaded segments have bad CRC's you should try and get re-posts of the bad segments before you bother with setting the le type or creator.

The following is a table of applications, there native files and the Types they each have. You can set these manually using FileTyper or ResEdit:

FILE / TYPE / CREATOR / SOFTWARE

.sit SITD SIT! StuffIt Deluxe Archive .sea APPL SIT! StuffIt Deluxe Self Extracting Archive .cpt PACT CPCT Compact Pro Archive .sea APPL EXTR Compact Pro Self Extracting Archive .img dimg ddsk Disk Copy 6.2 Image .smi APPL ddsk Disk Copy Self Mounting Image .img dimg Wrap ShrinkWrap 2.1 Image .img hdrv Wrap ShrinkWrap 2.1 Drive Container .smi APPL sImg ShrinkWrap 3.0 Self Mounting Image .img dimg Wrap ShrinkWrap 3.0 Image .img dimg dCpy DiskCopy 4.2 Image 金 APPL kajr Apple Installer 金 APPL VIS3 InstallerVISE Installer 金 APPL STi0 StuffIt InstallerMaker Installer

-PARTIAL ATTACHMENTS There may be times when you want to grab only select parts of an attachment (to combine with a partial attachment) or manually download and decode the parts (if there is some error in the part order or content).

Open the thread of the attachment by clicking the blue, leftmost arrow in YA-NW.

Hold down the command key and select the specific parts that you want. They should be highlighted.

Go to the 'File' menu and select 'Save As', you will be presented with a Save window.

Make sure to select the check box 'Save encoded text'.

Choose a location on your hard drive and select Save.

Now what you have is a UU encoded text le containing the parts that you selected. You will need UUCD to combine and reorder partial attachments. After these parts have been decoded you should be left with an intact, complete archive which StuffIt should be able to handle.
