*UPLOADINNG -INTRODUCTION It is recomended that you use YA-NewsWatcher 2.4.x, 3.1.x or 4.1.x for uploading binaries. The following instructions assume it's use to Upload. Pleas note that MT-Newswatcher does not yet allow you to upload.

Please be careful. When you post, often you may be breaking the law of some country. Software Copyrights are a serious issue to Software Publishers, Software Coders and many government institutions. ABMA is a very small and almost insignificant drop in the pirating bucket, but much of what happens here is illegal. There is no polite way to say this: COVER YOUR ASS. I would strongly recommend that you never use your real name when posting, USE A NIC NAME. The other golden rule is, NEVER e-mail stuff to anyone unless you absolutely trust them. Even then, it is best to avoid e-mailing. It leaves a very specific trail, right to YOU. Also, if your ISP and or News Client is putting your IP address in your posted messages, don't even THINK about posting binaries. An IP address and a Host name are all anyone needs to find out EXACTLY who and where you are. You have to understand that posting commercial, copyrighted software for public use is ILLEGAL. Especially if you are in the US. So, Please watch out for yourself.

-SETTING UP YA-NEWSWATCHER In YA-NewsWatcher preferences go to 'Message Files', set the 'News Part Size' in Kb to between 200 and 800. Most news servers will only accept attachments that are less than 1000kb, some even less. Set the 'News Encoding' to Binhex, not UU. Go to the 'Miscellaneous Options', make sure that the 'Are You Sure Alert on Posts' is unchecked. Go to the 'Message Options' and make sure to enter an alias or nic for yourself under the 'Full Name'. It is also advisable to enter alias information for 'Mail Server' and 'Email Address'.

-ENCODING THE FILE FOR POSTING The ideal here is to have all of the required files needed to install the application you are posting in a form that other people can use with the least amount of effort. The format to use is indicated to the right of the = sign, with the stuff in () as optional.

The following is a list of the possible formats that an application install will come in:

Folder = Sit or Disk Image As is. This form is common with most shareware and small, simple programs. There is no installer. The application is ready to run as it is.

Installer = None This is a common format for all sorts of applications. It is a simple installer that can be run from any place; on the desktop, from a floppy, from a CD, from a Disk Image, etc.. Most installers are already compressed, compressing them further with StuffIt is mostly a waste of time.

Disk Image = None (or Sit) A pre-made disk image. You will find this on CD's and they are a common form over the internet. It is possible that you will want to compress this in a StuffIt file. Many times disk images are already compressed, further compressing them is a waste of time. Be conservative about compressing a large disk image. Often it takes a very long time to stuff/unstuff and yields very little compression.

Installer w/ files or CD = Disk Image This is one of the most common formats for all sorts of applications. It is an installer and one or more associate files, often with lots of files and folders. Usually these are run from a disk image. Rarely, they are run from a folder.

'K this is tricky.

The deal with CD's is that sometimes you have to have an EXACT duplicate for them to work. That can sometimes be accomplished with a disk image, but not always. This will usually mean a VERY large upload (600Mb) .There are now plenty of folks with cable and ISDN lines that can easily afford to upload entire CD's in a night without batting an eye. There is also a group just for entire CD's called alt.binaries.mac.applications.cd-images. And, there are plenty of CD installers that will work IF you have the right files and pathnames on them. Knowing what files/folders are needed is very tricky and comes with experience, educated guesses and luck. Sometimes (rarely) you can simply drag the files of the CD

There is no set way to do this. You can ask the group or go with trial and error:

Make a guess at which files and folders are needed for the install. (obviously Chicken Eyeball 5.7 should install just fine without the 302Mb movie files called "Demo of our office Party")

Make an empty disk image that will accommodate all of the files you think are required.

Copy all of the files to the Disk Image. Make sure to match le names and paths exactly.

Remove the CD and try to install the application with a full install. If it works, and you can use the installed app, it will probably be ne.

Floppy = Image and Sit Make images of each floppy. I recommend putting all of the image les in one Sit archive.


-MAKING A DISK IMAGE Use DiskCopy 6.3.2. Do not use ShrinkWrap because it has several serious aws, especially with HFS+ format (wich it simply can not recognize !)

You will have to decide what format; Read/Write, Read-Only or Read- Only/Compressed.

If there are many smaller files on a CD and/or it is not a single installer file only, go ahead an use Read-Only/Compressed. This can take a long, long time, so be patient. Other wise use Read-Only.

In the Preferences, make sure that 'Verify Checksums' is checked. In the Preferences, make sure that 'Zero Blocks' and 'Mount After words' is unchecked.

Make sure that you have enough room on your hard drive to save the image files(s).

Drag and Drop the disk(s) onto DiskCopy's floating window.

If you are making an image from scratch, follow the above procedures except instead of dragging a physical disk on a window, go to DiskCopy's menu and select Image: Create New Image.

-NAMING THE POST There is much debate in ABMA regarding this issue. If you leave the actual le names intact, it make's it real easy for casual onlookers (software developers, search engines and feds) to nd you and your posts. Renaming them with phonetic spelling, abbreviation or loopy names such as Digital Performer to Pigital Deformer can protect you and ABMA, but it also makes it hard to know what the le really is. If you rename your post, make sure to include the real information in a readme, not the message area. There is no right or wrong here. Though I personally do not like to make it too easy. I don't want every lurker coming through our doors to instantly gure out what's going on. It's too risky. What I do like is people that get excited about all the software AND participate in ABMA rather than just coming passing through.

-SEGMENTING THE FILE If your post is larger than 1 to 3 Mb's, you should segment the le into smaller pieces before posting them.

Use DropSegment 4.0 from the StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 Package.

The size of the segments should be between 1 and 3 Mb's each. You can set the size of the segments in DropSegment's Preferences.

Go ahead and drop the le on DropSegment.

When you are done, you might want to change the le names a little.

I like to pad single digits with a zero so that the order of the les is correct.

Also, you should probably remove .sit or .img from the Segment names because it is useless and only attracts unwanted attention.

-INFORMATION TO INCLUDE WITH YOU POST It is strongly recommended that you include some information with your post in a separate post or even as a text le attachment to a separate post (readme).

Serial Numbers CRC's Total number of segments (DropSegment segments, NOT article parts made by NewsWatcher) Segment size Full application name and publisher Application name and version used to make the archive(s) Archive formats ie installer/disk image/Sit Notes regarding the application and any particulars about installing it

-UPPING THE DAMN THING ! Fire up YA-NW.

Select alt.binaries.mac.applications in your saved groups or full groups window list.

From the menu, go to 'News' and select 'New Posting'.

Enter 'alt.binaries.mac.applications' in the 'Newsgroups' if it is not already entered there.

Enter a 'Subject'. The (altered) post name is good to put here.

Enter some content in the message window. I always put "Please see the ReadMe for more information regarding this post."

Select the fourth button from the left in the message window (It has an icon of a document with ones and zeros on it).

A window will open up called 'Attached File Setting', from here select the 'Set' button.

Navigate to the folder containing your segments and select the first one and select the OK button.

Repeat these steps for each binary segment until you have the entire post ready to go.

Select the post button in the upper right corner for each of your message segments or use Command E. This will send the messages to YA-NW's que. Make sure that when you are done, the que is not on hold or you les will not get sent.

There are auto posting programs you can use after you get the hang of the basics.

PS Go slow. Check your first post by downloading it, to make certain that it has been done correctly. Often, there can be all sorts of problems that you have no control over. The USENET is frequently subject to Entropy. It's just the way it is, so save yourself some frustration and be prepared for things to go wrong or misbehave. It takes practice. Go with small posts first as you learn. Be polite to the ABMAites, if your rude, the safety comes of the flame-throwers and you got start ducking fast. Ask for help and watch how others do it.

ABMA Toolkit This has all of the programs you will ever need to function in ABMA. Uploads, Downloads, Decodes, all of it. The Toolkit comes in 12 separate pieces I pompously refer to as Volumes. Each volume is "stand alone". That means each one can be downloaded and used independantly of any other (unlike the segments of a post).

ABMA QuickStart This has the absolute minimum required applications and data for Downloading, Decoding and Uploading. It comes in 2 segments, both of which need to be downloaded to use. It is much smaller than the entire ToolKit, and with only the bare essentials.

*TIPS, TRICKS AND SHORTCUTS

-Incomplete Parts ? Often times MT or YA NewsWatcher will not display all of the available posts on a server. Before requesting a re-post from the poster, there is a simple search you can perform to determine if the parts are available on the server.

Select the abma newsgroup in the Full Group List window. Use Special: Search News (or Command -) to perform a search for the post you want. Specify what you are searching for. A window will open displaying the number of posts that match your search. Double click the result displayed in the window. NewsWatcher will retrieve all the items and display them in a news window.

Try this first, before making re-post requests.

-Hiding your server One of the ways that THEY find you is by your IP address (posted with your message) and your ISP. If they have both pieces of that information, they got ya. SO, use an ISP that does not post your IP (a number like 133.34.200.12) AND hide your server. Your server is identified at the very top of the message header in the "Path". Every time you post, your post travels (propigates) from server to server, in a path. That path is stamped on your message, with the originating server at the very end of the path. Servers are seperated by a ! mark. YA-NW lets you add any thing you want to the Path. Open up several posts, randomly copy some of the severs from the posters path and paste them in to your 'Extra Header Lines' of your message You will have something like this: newsfeed.cwix.com!extra1.newsguy.com!newsp1.newsguy.com!dca1- hub1.news.digex.net!intermedia!feed1.news.rcn.net!rcn! This is a great way of veiling your actual ISP.

*BE GOOD (SORT OF) The golden rule here is BE RESPECTFUL when at all possible. Especially to the newbies asking for help and the posters freely upping the binaries. Seriously, part of what makes ABMA so special is how easy it is here to get help, to have information freely given. There is no place like that for the PC's. The "regs" that post are often risking there ASS to post. They are taking a big risk for nothing except the fun of Posting. That's really what makes ABMA what it is. Be kind if you can. Remember that on the other side of your screen are actual people, just like you. They have feelings, thoughts and lives that are important to them. We all do. It is real easy to forget that when all you see about a person is a nic and a line of text.

Do Not DEMAND, THREATEN or HARASS anyone about posts (or anything else). Just don't do it. It never gets results. The thing to remember about this group is that everything here is FREE. For that price, you get what you are given. It is OK to ask for something, but do it respectfully and ACCEPT NO FOR AN ANSWER if it comes. You will save yourself alot of grief. No one OWES anyone anything in this group, PERIOD (accept basic respect!).

If you want something, be patient. If it is incomplete, corrupt or otherwise unavailable to you, it is only a matter of time before it shows up again. I guarantee it. Stuff is always being re-posted here. If you keep your eyes open, you will nd it.

This is a COOP, not a place to TRADE. If you have lots of stuff to upload, great ! Do it without strings attached. Don't come here and try to leverage posts from people with all the great software you have (ANYTHING you might have is bound to come through here WITHOUT you). You can always make requests (which are usually much more successful when accompanied by a post) but remember that it may or may not be fulfilled. That's just how it goes.

If you don't have stuff to contribute that's OK. In no time you will. You can always help with re-posts (that is a BIG help! When you need something you will be MUCH more likely to get it).

Being respectful and contributing to the group in some way is not just so you can be more like Mother Terressa. If you are generally helpful and friendly and make contributions, others will really go out of there way to help you. That means when you really want something, you can request it and your pretty much be assured of getting it.

If you really want all the stuff here, GET A DEDICATED NEWS SERVER. I can not emphasize this enough. Most of the regs use Supernews and Altopia. There are a bunch to choose from. The advantage to having a commercial news server is that the parts are usually always complete and the posts are retained for many weeks. *MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ! The thing to remember is that no news server is going to protect you from the Law. Period. When it comes to there ass or yours, who are they gunna choose ? The news providers are there to make money from you. It sounds cynical, but it's true. The best way they can do that is by providing a great news service, un- edited and unfiltered. It is not there job to monitor or censor what goes through the pipe. But, if the arm of the law demands that what is going through the pipe (to you or from you) is illegal, the news providers are quite obligated to cooperate with the law. It is not your constitutional right to break copyright law, even though that would be nice in some ways. That means fessing up your account information and your activity is something they will most certainly do if handed a subpoeana. That's how it works. Do not forget that.
