mpeg 포맷의 파일을 iMovie로 불러들이는 경우에 QuickTime Pro(QuickTime 일반 버젼이 아닌 프로 버젼)가 설치되어 있다면 이를 이용하시면 됩니다.
mpeg 파일을 QuickTime Pro에서 열어 다시 Export를 하시되 DV Stream으로 해주시면 됩니다.
물론 프리미어나 FCP를 사용하는 방법도 있기는 하지만...
그런 후에 iMovie에서 해당파일을 불러 오시길 바랍니다.

혹시 도움이 될 지는 모르겠으나 제가 iMovie 사용법에 관하여 정리해 놓은 내용이 있으니 참조를 하셔도 좋을 듯하네요.
